She came to Rapid City at an early age from Pennsylvania.
In the 1890 Reconstructed Census there is a Charles Oswald with a son Clarence 12 and a daughter Nettie age 9, no places of birth given Nettie or Janet or Helen not found in 1900 census in Pennington County. In the 1930 census Nettie is born in Illinois.
On the 8th of January, 1906, Mr. Baken was united in marriage to Miss Nettie Oswald, a daughter of Charles and Augusta (Long) Oswald, (Her death certificate says her mother was Augusta Pinder)
She was the widow of William P Baken, Sheriff of Pennington County when he was killed in his home by James T Lawton who confessed to the killing.Considerable doubt can be raised as to the facts not supporting his confession. He was a friend of hers before and after the killing of her husband. He was paroled in 1956 and died in Sioux Falls in 1960. And Certain things he said suggested he had a thing for Billy's wife..
William served Pennington County for 30 years as deputy game warden,clerk of courts, deputy sheriff, and sheriff and was chief of police in 1917 1920 and 1930, retiring in that year.
She was survived by a son William P Baken Jr of Rapid City.
In the 1880 census of McLean County IL there is a Charles Oswald age 31 born in Michigan, he is a Barber, with a wife Augusta age 20 born in Germany, and a son Clarence 2 yrs old born in Wyoming. It is as close as I can come to what might be her family.
