FOREVER IN OUR HEARTS MARY ELIZABETH GARTEN "MARY BETH" Born Mary Elizabeth Smith on October 1, 1937 to Troy and Dixie (Willis) Smith, passed away Tuesday, December 9, 2008. Mary Beth was born and raised in Verdigris, Oklahoma. She attended Verdigris school and graduated from Claremore High in 1955. While a student riding the bus to Claremore for high school classes, she met the handsome young Korean War veteran who was her bus driver. She and Jim Garten were married the summer after her graduation. They made their home in several Oklahoma and California communities before settling their family in Banning, California. They welcomed 5 children into their home, Troy, Dixie, Charles (Chuck), Mary Kathleen (Kathy) and Amanda (Mandy). Mary Beth was known for her beautiful soprano voice and used it to glorify God and enrich those around her. She was a member of the Pass Chorale and Banning United Methodist Church choir for many years. She often presented popular music programs for various community groups. In her later years, she enjoyed being the pianist for the Moravian Mission Church on the Morongo Indian Reservation. Mary Beth worked for nearly 30 years as a para-professional with the Banning Unified School District. She was assigned to several schools in the teaching assistant capacity, but loved working with the disabled children the best. She presented many holiday musical programs with the public school elementary children. She was preceded in death by her parents, Troy and Dixie Smith; her husband, Jim Garten; her children, Kathy as an infant, Chuck, Mandy and Dixie. She is survived by her son, Troy Garten and spouse, Brenett, of Beaumont, California; brother, Bob Smith and wife Betty, of Chester, Utah; sister, Virginia Cross and husband, Eldon, of Claremore, Oklahoma. She leaves seven grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and other family members that will miss her smile and jolly voice. Arrangements are entrusted to Miller-Jones Mortuary & Cremations, Inc., 1501 W. Florida Ave., Hemet, California. Services will be held at Miller-Jones Mortuary, Hemet, Wednesday, December 31, 2008, 10:00am. A Graveside Service will follow at San Gorgonio Memorial Park, Banning, California at 12:00 noon. Social gathering following service. Reverend Sandra Crase officiating.
