Annie Jane Nancy Simmons married James Barber, also of North Carolina, in about 1830. They moved to Pike County, Alabama and began raising their family there prior to moving to Winston County, Mississippi. Later they moved to Neshoba County and finally to Leake County, Miss.

According to the death certificates of two of her sons (Frank & William), Annie's maiden name was Simmons. In the 1840 Pike Co, AL census, living next to James & Annie Barber's family was 70-80 year old John Simmons (living alone) who was most likely Annie's father.

It was previously erroneously thought that Annie Jane had been a McBeth, daughter of Walter McBeth, but that has been proven incorrect. However, it is known that there was some connection with the McBeth family--perhaps only close friends.

James & Annie Jane Barber had four boys and one daughter.
