ABERNATHY, COMMANDER BUFORD D., USN (RETIRED), 88, of Louisville, died at home Wednesday, February 27, 2008 after a long illness. He was born February 3, 1920 in Pulaski, TN and graduated from Columbia Military Academy in Columbia, TN. He won an appointment to the United States Naval Academy in 1938, by competitive examination, having stood seventh on the list of all competitors from all Honor Military Service Schools nationwide. The Class of 1942 was accelerated to graduate December 19, 1941, after World War II was declared. On receiving his commission, he immediately reported and served in the Pacific War Zone during World War II. Remaining in military service during the Korean conflict, he served on the Battleship New Jersey and later as Aide and Flag Secretary with the Commander Seventh Fleet and with Commander Naval Air Force, Pacific Fleet. He next served on destroyers as executive officer and commanding officer. His last assignment was executive officer of the University of Louisville ROTC. He received many medals, ribbons, awards and commendation during his long and honorable service to his country. Commander Abernathy remained in Louisville after his retirement from the U.S. Navy with the University of Louisville for two years. On leaving the University, he was employed by Kentucky State Government as Manager of the Louisville Area Job Bank. He was a member of Christ Church United Methodist, Louisville Woodcrafters Club and United States Naval Academy Alumni Association. He was preceded in death by his parents, William DeLacey Abernathy and Elizabeth Buford Abernathy; and one brother, DeLacey Abernathy. He is survived by his wife, Sudith Pogue Abernathy; son, Kevin W. Abernathy; two stepdaughters, Sandra Brewer Duvall (Gregory) and Marianne Brewer Thomas (Donald M.), both of Charlestown, IN; six grandchildren, Dr. Christopher Mullins (Lisa), Brian Mullins and Amanda Mullins, Howard D. Thomas (Tabitha), April Thomas and Rebecca Thomas; five great- grandchildren, Aleah Furnish, Brice Mullins, Laila Thomas, Jenna Mullins and Destiny Ogden; three nephews, James Edwards Mack (Lois), Morgan Abernathy and Mark Abernathy (Linda); and three great-nieces, Leslie Clag (Chad), Julie Morrison and Tracey Morton (Jake). Funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Pearson's, 149 Breckenridge Lane with burial in Cave Hill Cemetery. Visitation will be from noon until time of service Wednesday. The family is grateful to the Hospice Team who provided such good care and to caregiver Susan Ross and others who were so helpful in caring for him.
