Kathryn "Aunt Kitty" was named Catherine after both of her grandmothers and great grandmothers. She was born April 13, 1880 in Center, Howard County, Indiana, the first of eleven children born to Thomas Patrick and Anna Cecilia (Horoho) Ryan. She told her great niece Margie Beaver that she changed the spelling of Catherine to Kathryn "to be different". She was a long-time member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and served as a practical nurse in several areas. She never married although she had a gentleman court her for twelve years before he married someone else. She took care of her parents during their elderly years and was always there to take care of her siblings when they needed her. At the age of 95, she would recount how, as a long-distance telephone operator, they had always asked for her when calling Italy. Her clear and distinct voice could be easily heard on the trans-atlantic cable. She was an utterly charming woman who held onto a chair while dancing an Irish jig (at 95 years of age) and sang with an Irish accent about a rogue called Barney. She made an impression on all who met her.
A rosary was said for Kathryn when she died at the age of 96 on May 30, 1976 in Kokomo, Indiana. She looked resplendid in a fine cream-colored dress that had been saved many decades; her white rosary in her hands. Her nephew, John Beaver, said that the rosary used to be black. She had rubbed the color off throughout the years she prayed with it. Burial was at Crown Point Cemetery in Kokomo. A wonderful legacy Aunt Kitty left her family was her meticulous record keeping of births for "Mothers People" and "Fathers People", detailing births, deaths, marriages, and significant events for the Horohos, Ryans, and Scotts.
