Dick Ranes

RICHARD BYRON "DICK" RANES was born June 17, 1940 in Forest Grove, Oregon, the son of the late Byron Albert Ranes and Hallie "Irene" (Lockett) Ranes Kappel. He was raised and received his education in the Gales Creek community and then attended Forest Grove High School, having been a graduate of the Class of 1959. The first Ranes family settled in the Gales Creek community in 1856.
He was united in marriage to Linda L. Franklin on June 17, 1961 in the Glenwood Baptist Church, with Pastor Ivan U. Marble, conducting. They celebrated their 47th Wedding Anniversary this past June. Following their marriage they have made their home near the Ranes Homestead in Gales Creek, Oregon.
Dick worked in the Logging industry for Harley Dames for several years. He later worked for Noblecraft in Hillsboro, Oregon, as a cabinet maker. He then served an Apprenticeship in the Machine Shop Industry, having worked for Monarch Machinery in Northwest Portland and then for Beal Pipe and Tank Company in Portland, Oregon. Dick returned to the logging industry having owned and operated Ranes Logging Company, Inc., until becoming injured on July 30, 1981 at the age of forty-one years old when he had to retire.
He had been a member of the Forest Grove Elks Lodge #2240 B.P.O.E. from 1975 to the late 1980's, having served as a Tiler.
Among his special interests he enjoyed fishing, hunting, and miscellaneous woodworking projects including making gun stocks and violins. He also enjoyed leather tooling, filing chainsaws and tending to his smokehouse.
Survivors include his wife, Linda L. Ranes, of the family home in Gales Creek, Oregon; his mother, Hallie
"Irene" Kappel, of Forest Grove, Oregon; and his four children and their spouses, Penny I. Butler, of Seattle, Washington; Douglas R. and Lani Ranes, of Gales Creek, Oregon; Scott A. and LaDonna Ranes, of Cherry Grove, Oregon; and Amy D. Ranes-Sorenson and her husband, Chris Sorenson, of Portland, Oregon.
Also surviving are ten grandchildren; Joshua Butler, Marcella "Marcy" Ranes, Melinda Ranes, Byron Ranes,
Ryan McDonald, Spencer McDonald, Morgan Ranes, Hannah Ranes, Dylan Ranes and Jack Sorenson.
The family suggests that remembrances may be made to the N.R.A. (National Rife Association), 11250 Waples Mill Rd. Fairfax, VA 22030, in his memory.
