He is preceded in death by the mother of his children, Della Adkins; wives Ammie Adkins and Lucille Adkins; son Earl Adkins, daughter-in-laws Eleanor Adkins and Lois Adkins; sister Willie Mae Hewett; and brothers Columbus Adkins and Johnny Adkins. Mr. Adkins is survived by sons Leo Adkins, Harold Adkins (Martha Ann), Theo Adkins (Marcie); daughter Gladys Weaver (Byron); 12 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren. He is also survived by 6 step-children, Hilda Fay Haddock, Marie Vaughn, Joyce Burchfield, Diana Barfuss, Clentis Lucas and Roger Lucas.
Mr. Adkins served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, and retired from Tyndall Air Force Base civil service. He also retired from Bay Medical Center. His hobbies included fishing, camping, tap dance, gardening, and playing his violin and harmonica. He was also a member of Springfield Community Church.
The family would like to extend a special thank you to Emerald Coast Hospice and Sea Breeze Healthcare facility for the compassion and comfort they gave to our father in his last days. Funeral services will be held Monday, July 22, 2013 at 10 a.m. at Kent Forest Lawn Chapel, with Pastor Elton Haddock and Pastor John Ramsey officiating. Interment will follow at Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday, July 21, 2013 from 6-8 p.m. at Kent Forest Lawn Funeral Home. Serving as pallbearers will be Mr. Adkins' grandchildren: Dusty Adkins, Bradley Malone, Chris Adkins, Chase Keenum, Jacob Adkins, and Chris Burchfield.
