David was employed as a coal miner by the Pond Creek Pocahontas Coal Company. He worked in the Bartley No. 1 mine in Bartley, McDowell County, WV. David and 91 other men were killed when the mine exploded on January 10, 1940. His name appears on the left side of the Bartley No. 1 Memorial. - Per findagrave member Penny Harris
