Son of Alfred Caleb Shafer, Sr. and Minnie May Kiser. Known as "Tex" or Elmo, he married Audra Inis Current on Nov. 28, 1942 in Lordsburg, Hidalgo, New Mexico. They had no children together but he helped rear Audra's 2 sons from a previous marriage: Delbert and Clarence Earvin. His mother, Minnie Kiser Shafer died of child-bed fever about 3 weeks after his birth. He and his brother Ovel were raised by their maternal grandparents, Andrew Jess & Nancy Jane HOLT Kiser according to the wishes of their mother before her death.

OBITUARY:
Earnest E Shafer, 76, of Bisbee died of an illness Friday, March 22, 1996, at Copper Queen Hospital in Bisbee. Mr Shafer was born Aug. 5, 1919, in Ranger, Texas. He had been a resident of Bisbee for 54 years. Earnest was a charter member of the San Jose Bible Baptist Church. He retired from Phelps Dodge Corp. in 1975 with 33 years of service as a boiler maker. Mr Shafer was a World War II veteran with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He was a member of American Legion Post 16 in Bisbee. Mr. Shafer is survived by his wife, Audra Current Shafer of Naco, Ariz.; two sons, Clarence Earvin of Safford and Delbert Earvin of Naco, Ariz.; two grandchildren; and three great grandchildren. Earnest and Audra were married for 54 years. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at San Jose Bible Baptist Church on Naco Highway with Dr. Alan Nash officiating. Visitation will be from 4-6 p.m. Monday at the Bisbee Funeral Home. Interment will immediately follow church services at Cochise Memory Gardens. Arrangements are by the Bisbee Funeral Home, Bisbee.
