RIO - Daniel W. Hall, age 83, also known as "Winnie," died peacefully at his home with his family by his side on Sunday morning, March 9, 2003. He was born on Jan. 11, 1920, in Hampden township, Columbia County, Wis.

He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in the 82nd Airborne Division, 325th Infantry Regiment, during World War II for 2 1/2 years, including two glider invasions, the Normandy Invasion, and the Battle of the Bulge. He received five Battle Stars and was among 3 percent of the original units sent that returned after the war.

He also served a brief tour in the Korean War. On Jan. 7, 1946, he married Lucetta at St. Raphael's Cathedral in Madison. While in the service, they lived in Fort Bragg, N.C., where they also owned and operated a trailer court until 1952, when they returned to Rio.

Shortly thereafter they opened Danny's Clothing Store. In 1957, they built a new building in the center of town and enjoyed a thriving business for 17 years. After selling the store, Danny established Hall Insurance Agency. He operated this business for 10 years until his retirement.

First and foremost, Danny was a loving father and husband. He was dedicated to the well-being of his family, evidenced by his generous contributions to our country and community which included: Rio School Board member and president, Rio Village Board member, St. Joseph's Catholic Church Council, Rio Chamber of Commerce member, and member of the Rio Legion Post No. 208.

His hobbies and interests included hunting, fishing, part-time farming, playing cards, big band dancing, and bird watching.

In addition to his loving wife of 57 years, Lu, he is survived by his children; a brother, Harold (Paula) Hall of Dover, Ark.; eight wonderful grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Daniel F. Hall and Nora (nee Martin) Hall; and a sister, Margaret Schwonke.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, March 13, 2003, at 11 a.m. at ST. JOSEPH'S CATHOLIC CHURCH, Rio, with the Rev. Joseph Ononiwu officiating. Burial will follow at St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Rio.
