Frederick Rummel was a United States Soldier in the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865.
He enlisted on July 15th, 1861, at New York City, New York, for two years service at the age of 30, and was mustered into service as a Private in Company I of the 20th New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment on July 17th, 1861. He served with the regiment in its campaigns in the Army of the Potomac, until its term of service expired in 1862, when he mustered out of service with the Company on June 1st, 1863, at New York City, New York.
He re-enlisted on August 4th, 1863, at New York City, New York, for three years service, and was mustered into service as a Corporal in Company F of the 9th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry Regiment on August 29th, 1863. The 9th Veteran Regiment was merged with several other veteran regiments that were organizing in New York City at the time, and the company was assigned as Company I of the 17th New York Veteran Volunteer Infantry regiment on October 14th, 1863. He was reduced to the rank of Private, and continued in his duties with the regiment until he contracted an illness and was taken to a hospital.
Private Rummel died of disease on July 27th, 1864, at Decatur, Alabama, and was originally buried at that place. After the war his remains were dis-interred and taken to the National Cemetery in Corinth, Mississippi.
