Edith Burris Allen, 94, of the Forrest Heights community near Athens, died Monday afternoon, Nov. 3, 2008, at Woods Memorial Hospital.
A native of Polk County, she was a daughter of the late Frank and Mary Newton Burris, and was also preceded in death by her husband, J.V. "Red" Allen; one son, Hubert Allen; one sister, Virgie Quintrell; and three brothers, Ralph, Bill and Clarence Burris. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Athens, and was a retired seamstress.
Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Marsha and Rex Payne of Athens; one son and daughter-in-law, Vestal and Charlene "Chee" Allen of Signal Mountain; four granddaughters; two grandsons; 14 great-grandchildren; one sister, Laverne Rogers of Etowah; and two brothers, Jack Burris of Collierville, and Neal Burris of Lady Lake, Fla.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church in Athens with the Rev. Oran Creasman officiating. Entombment will follow in the Mausoleum at McMinn Memory Gardens.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Walker, Pat Smith, Abraham Doctor, Rudy Kinser, Sam Stephens, Andy Allen, Matt Allen, Terry Carroll, Rick Anderson and Jim Pitt.
The family will receive friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Jerry Smith Funeral Home.
The family suggests that memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Faye Forgety, 120 County Road 447, Athens, TN 37303; or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, 4219 Hillsboro Road, Suite 306, Nashville, TN 37215.
