CURLLSVILLE - A 59-year old Curllsville woman died early Friday morning when flames gutted her one-story frame home.
The death of Mrs. Emerson (Pauline) Byers was attributed to asphyxiation by Clarion county Coroner J. Ward Kier. He set the time of death as approximately 7 a.m.
Coroner Kier, who conducted the investigation of the fire along .with Sgt. John Paxton fire marshal from State Police Troop Headquarters in Punxsutawney, said Mrs. Byers also suffered burns of the face and arms.
The fire was confined to the living room, the stairway leading to the attic and one bedroom wall. The remainder of the house was damaged by smoke and water. Several windows were blown out from the intense heat.
It is believed that the fire broke out, around 7 a.m. However, neighbors were unable to contact the fire company because the telephone lines were out of order.
The Sligo Volunteer Fire Company was summoned at 7:15 a.m. from the James Shook residence, located about one fourth mile from the Byers house.
Two trucks from Sligo and one truck from Callensburg responded to the alarm. The fire was brought under control at 7:45 a.m. Firemen remained at the scene until 10 a.m. While the cause of the fire is unknown, it is believed that flames may have broke out in the living room couch.
Mrs. Byers was at home alone when the fire started. Her husband had left earlier for work. No estimate of damage was available last evening, according to a fire department spokesman.
Approximately 15 years ago, the Byers home in the same location was destroyed by fire.
She was born in. Porter Township, Clarion County, October 29, 1907, a daughter of Howard and Agnes Gathers Will. She and Emerson Byers were married January 26, 1929.
Mrs. Byers was a member of the First Regular Baptist Church of Reidsburg.
In addition lo her husband, she is survived by a son, Wayne Byers, stationed with the U. S. Air Force at Chandler Field, Ariz.; five daughters, Mrs. Gerald (Lois) Jones of Clarion RD, Mrs. Jack (Kay) Hollingsworth of Rimersburg RD, Mrs. Edwin (Carol) Eiseman of Strattanville, Mrs. Gary (Ellen) Smith
of New Bethlehem RD and Mrs. Dennis (Vera) Montgomery of Curllsville; a sister, Mrs. Kathleen Shirey of Gary, Ind., and 17 grandchildren.
Removal was made to the Coble Funeral Home in Clarion where funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday with Rev. Rayburn Nulph, pastor of the First Regular Baptist Church in Reidsburg, officiating. Interment will be in the Reidsburg Cemetery.
