Alf was the 2nd of his mother's 14 children. He was a farmer, manager of a coal mine, and a custodian at the North Dakota state capitol in his later years. He and his wife Ruth AlLena Wilmot Johnson were married on December 19, 1934. They were together until Alf's death in 1996, less than one month shy of their 62nd wedding anniversary.
