Jim was married first to Lura Barrett and they had three children: Julian, Robert and Margaret. His second wife was Mary Jeanice Downs; they had no children. Jim was the son of Martha Ann Tomlinson and Benjamin Holmes Smith. He had one sister Mary Smith Huey.

Bowdon Auto Supply Company. Jim served in the Army during World War I and saw action overseas. He was also a member of the council of Bowdon and served on the Board of
Trustees of the Bowdon Public Schools
