JAMES EDGAR "JAKE" CONNEL

BRONTE ~ James Edgar "Jake" Connel, 85, of Blackwell went home to be with his Heavenly Father on Thursday, November 13, 2008.

Visitation will be Sunday, November 16, 2008 with the family present to receive visitors from 2:00p.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Funeral services will be Monday, November 17, 2008 at the Bronte Church of Christ at 2:00 p.m. with burial to follow in the Blackwell Cemetery. Arrangements are by Shaffer Funeral Home.

James was born July 9, 1923. He was one of nine children; seven boys and two girls. He grew up in Clyde and graduated from Abilene Christian College in 1949. He was a WWII veteran, serving in the Army in the Philippines. On December 25, 1948 he married Frances E. Thetford.

James was in education either teaching or in administration for 45 years. He served on the State Board of Education for a time. He began his teaching career in Avoca, Texas later coaching and becoming a superintendent. He then was employed in Richland Springs as a superintendent before moving to Blackwell in 1972 where he was the superintendent for Blackwell schools until he retired in 1991.

He enjoyed bowling, golf and woodworking in his retirement.

James was a long time member of Bronte Church of Christ and was currently serving as an Elder of the church. He was a loving husband, wonderful father and grandfather, and a faithful servant to the Lord.

James was preceded in death by two children, Barbara and Gaylan and five siblings.

He is survived by his wife, Frances, of Blackwell; his daughter Linda Dixon and her husband Roy of Abilene; his sons, John Connel of Snyder, and Marshall Connel and wife Sandy of Lovington, NM and Brad Connel and wife Kim of Midland; 17 grandchildren; 19 grandchildren; his brothers, Ben Connel and wife Myota of Phoenix, AZ and Bob Connel and wife Edie of Abilene; and one sister, Lillie Faye Mann of Lubbock.

The family request in lieu of flowers that donations can be made to the Bronte Church of Christ Missionary fund.
