Charles W. Bailey, Dies at Age of 102.
The Rev. Charles W. BAILEY, 102, the last Civil War Veteran in Kansas, died Monday at Winter Veterans Hospital.
A resident of Baldwin, he was born at Watertown, Wis., February 10, 1848. When 15 years old he enlisted in the Union Army and served under the Generals Grant and Sherman for three years. he was wounded at Vicksburg.
After the war, he came to Kansas and after working as a cowboy for several years, settled near Humboldt.
Ordained in 1887.
In 1877 he married Mary E. STARK of Humboldt. They lived on a farm near Humboldt four years, then at the age of 33, both he and Mrs. Bailey entered Baker University. Bailey graduated and was ordained a minister in the spring of 1887.
His first church was at LeRoy, Kan. He later held pastorates at princton, Louisburg, Cherryvale, Yates Center, Garnett, Fort Scott, New Center and Valley Chapel.
He retired from the minisitry at the age of 90.
The Baileys were married 66 years before she died November 15, 1945.They had nine children, eight of the children attended Baker University.
Eight Children Survive.

Henry Irving BAILEY, Kirkwood, Mo.; Mr. George COUNTS, New York; Mrs. Earl JOHNSON, Chicago; Phebe Bailey GATES, Baldwin; and Herbert BAILEY, Hollywood, Calif.
A special assembly was held in his honor at Baker University on his 100th birthday, honoring him as the school's most famous alumnus. The entire town of Baldwin helped sponsor the celebration.
The Rev. Mr. Bailey entered the hospital here September 6, 1950. Until then he had not been sick since shortly before his 100th birthday.
Funeral services for the Rev. Mr. Bailey will be held at the First Methodist Church in Baldwin Wednesday at 3 p.m. The Rev. Clair HAYES will have charge of the service. He will be assisted by Dr. Nelson P. Horn, president of Baker University.
The body will lie in state at the Stanley Funeral Home until 2 p.m. Wednesday.
Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Baldwin.
