Roman Catholic Cardinal. Roman born Latino Malabranca Orsini came from a family which gave several Popes and Cardinals to the Church, himself being the son of a Roman senator Angelo Malabranca and a sister of Pope Nicholas III. Joining the Order of Friars Preachers at an early age, he obtained a doctorate in law from the University of Paris towards 1263. A master in theology, he was elected prior of the Roman priory of Santa Sabina, having already served as lector of its studium. Created cardinal bishop of Ostia e Velletri by Pope Nicholas III in the consistory of March 12, 1278, he served as vicar of the Pope and governor of Rome during the absence of the latter between July and November of 1279. Placing the first stone of the Franciscan church of Santa Maria Nuova in Florence and endowing the convent of Santa Sabina with a rich library, he was named dean of the Sacred College of Cardinals in 1289. Administrator of the see of Siponto, the Cardinal died in Perugia. His body was transported back to Rome and buried in the church of Santa Maria Sopra Minerva. Although he was never canonically beatified, various Dominican authors refer to him as such in their writings.
