Laura May Stanbery was a daughter of Van Buren Stanbery and Mintie (Bond) Stanbery who Laura Mae Stanbery burned to death as a young girl when her dress caught on fire while playing near a brushfire. She ran and her older siblings tried to catch her to put out the fire, but she it was too late. She died overnight.
Her father, Van, was in Grand Saline at the time, drinking at a local bar, and only found out about his little girl's accident upon arriving at home that evening. Van was so shaken up by that incident, feeling guilt for not having been there to save her, that he gave up drinking and turned his life over to Jesus Christ. At the time of his own death 22 years later he had served as a deacon at Starr Baptist church for 20 years.
