POCATELLO - Steven Grant Wood. 56, beloved husband, father, papa, son-, brother and uncle, returned with honor into his Heavenly Father's presence fully prepared to meet his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Tuesday, October 24, 2000.
Steven was the first born child of George D. and Viola S. Wood, born on October 2S, 1943, in Corpus Christi, Texas. He lived many of his childhood years in Inkom, Idaho, attending Marsh Valley High School and graduating from Pocatello High School in 1961. He earned degrees from Idaho State University and the University of Idaho Law School.
On August 5. 1966, he married his sweetheart, Lea Von Yowell, in the Idaho Falls LDS Temple for Time and All Eternity. Having joined the United States Naval Reserve in 1962, they honeymooned on their way to San Diego, California, where he reported for active duty. He continued his Navy service until 1968, at which time he was honorably discharged. During this time his Navy duties took the couple to Hawaii, where they lived in their own paradise for a year. After which they returned to Idaho, resuming, his education and beginning their family, They were blessed with three daughters and four sons and at this time have 12 grandchildren with the 13th expected. As an elder in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, he served a two-year mission in Toronto, Canada. Steven has been an active member of the church, serving diligently in Bishoprics, High Councils, Scouting, Primary, Young Men, Sunday School and Elders' Quorums. He daily strived to perfect his life and live the teachings of Jesus Christ. At the time of his death, he was a High Priest, serving as the second counselor in the NAM Creek Ward Bishopric. He was excited about Scouting and helped many young men achieve the rank of Eagle. His scouts loved him and called him "Uncle Woody". Steven loved the outdoors, fully appreciating nature each day. He especially enjoyed fishing, as well as hunting, horseback riding., camping, motorcycling and scouting He took many opportunities to spend time with his family, and most of all, loved playing with his grandchildren who lovingly called him "Papa " To his children, grandchildren and siblings, Steven is our hero -Always gentle and kind, he made everyone in his presence feel important and loved. He was a great teacher, taking every opportunity to use life experiences as a teaching moment. Through life, he always had a smile, a positive outlook and offered unconditional love,
Steven and Lea had joyously looked forward to their trip to Hawaii to witness the birth of their 12th grandchild. He is survived by his wife, Lea Wood; parents, George D. and Viola S Wood, children, Marci (Pat) Reddish, Billy (Sanae) Wood, Heather (Asa) DeBuck, Emily (Todd) Clezie, Steven Douglas Wood, Russell (Brenda) Wood, and Cy Wood; brothers, Alan (LeAnne) Wood, Sydney (Barbara) Wood and Donal (Shauna) Wood; Sisters, Sheri (Dan) Kunkel, and Teresa (Efrain) Velasquez; 12 Grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October31, at the Mink Creek Ward Chapel on Portneuf Road, Picatello, with Bishop Glen Anderson officiating.
The Viewing will be from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Monday, October 30, at Colonial Funeral Home 2005 S. Fourth Avenue, one hour before services at the church Tuesday. Burial will be in Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Pocatello.
