Elizabeth Harter was the daughter of George Harter who became the third wife of Jehu Grubb in 1833, after she was widowed by Abraham Bair. She had eight children with Abraham and three more with Jehu. She was said to be an excellent horsewoman. Much that we know about Jehu comes from documents filed by Elizabeth, his widow.

In June, 1984, the Canton Repository reported an interview of Elizabeth, taken 100 years before. She had been 91 years old at the time, and recalled coming to Ohio with her father George Harter in 1806, when "Canton Public Square contained only a clump of bushes with just three log cabins."
