James served 3-1/2 years in the Civil War as a member of Co. C. 33rd Reg't, Iowa Volunteer Infantry. Husband of Eliza Ann Andrews, married 12 Apr 1857 in Mahaska County, Iowa. To this union seven children were born in Mahaska Co., Iowa; William W, Penina R., Emma A., George L., Minnie Viola, Mary E. Baker, and one other infant, date unknown. Eunice Baker was Eliza's daughter. James, Eliza and their children moved to Oregon via covered wagon, drawn by large farm horses in the fall of 1871 and settled on a farm near Middleton, OR. This was a Homestead of 160 acres. Others that possibly came on the trip in 1871 were his brother John Baker and family, William Dodge and family, and Chris Ryan and family, maybe others. James was one of the seven founders of the Mountain Home Evangelical church, built in 1883. He served in the Civil War as a member of Co. C. 33rd Reg't, Iowa Vol. Infantry.
