She was the daughter of Salter Larkin and Ethel (Cox) Smith. Smith. She grew up in Lone Oak and attended school there. She married James Emery Nance Sr. on Dec. 11, 1945, in McAlester and since he was in the military, they moved around until he retired and they made their home in Hartshorne in 1960. She had worked at different jobs through the years and when they returned to Hartshorne she helped her husband with his newspaper deliveries. She had also worked at the Aldridge Hotel Restaurant and then was an administrative assistant at the McAlester Youth Emergency Shelter. She also operated a day care at her home. She was a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Hartshorne. She was a resident of Hartshorne and passed away at the age of 80 at a local nursing center. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James Emery Nance Sr. on March 25, 2004; a brother, Opal Smith, and a sister, Ona Capers. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14, at First Assembly of God Church in Hartshorne with the Revs. Joe Alzate, Jerry Grammar, and Ed Capers officiating. Burial will be at Elmwood Cemetery.
