Robert was attending Paul Smith College when he met Jean, when they were part of a forestry team. They were married in December 1969.
Arriving in Vietnam 30 March 1970, Robert was assigned to the 61st AHC, 268th Aviation Battalion, 17th Aviation Group, 1st Aviation Brigade, USARV.
While on a Cambodian mission during Operation Binh Tay the UH-1H #68-16396 that Robert was a crew member crashed and burned on the south slope of Hill 275 and 5 kilometers west southwest of the Pleidiereng Airfield. Robert and 3 crew members died as a result of bodily injuries and burns when the helicopter crashed and burned upon impact with the ground. The crew member bodies were recovered.
Survived by his wife, Jean M Sheppard of 3 High Street, Lebanon, New York and his parents; David L and Daphne P Sheppard of New York.
