DC was a son of Rufus and Ellen Bowers Huneycutt and lived his entire life in and around the Bloomington community of Stanly County, NC. For most his adult life he was a poultry and cattle farmer. In 1948 DC married Vera Bowers and together they had ten children: Darrell, Brenda, Deitra Kay, Connie, Dee William, Julie, Hub, Bonnie, Dwight "Ike", and DC Jr.
DC graduated from Millingport High School in 1944 and was immediately inducted into the US Army serving in Europe during the final year of World War II. He was a lifelong member of Canton Baptist Church.
