Joseph was a postal worker who struggled within a racist system. Like many of our veterans overseas, he learned that the entire world is not like the segregated southeastern U.S. During his era, military service was difficult for a man of colour, but returning to Memphis after overseas service was another challenge altogether. His daughter Maxine said, "NAACP was like going to church!" Theirs was a family serious about change, involved in the Movement from the early days.

Military Information: CPL, US ARMY
