A little man with a big heart and a big hat is how Charlie Mayo remembers his step great grandfather Emil Berry. Emil came to Arizona about 1900 to make a life for himself as a cowboy which he did! He met and married, as his second wife, Katherine, a widow with 3 children, and together they started a cream dairy in Franklin, Greenlee county, Arizona. After Katherine's death Emil continued his life as a rancher and it was while trying to jump a rail fence that he fell and broke his hip. His stay in the hospital was prolonged by pneumonia and he finally succumbed to a stroke while in the hospital. His step grandson-in-law, Charles Francis Gordon, husband of Katherine's grandaughter, Katherine Rose Kries Gordon, had the sad task of coming down from Medford, Oregon where he, Charles, and wife Katherine had moved just 2 years earlier from their home in Franklin. Emil was remembered with affection and respect by those contemporaries who had known him in Franklin.

Emil's obituary Published November 3, 1949 in the Tombstone Epitaph.

"Emil Berry, 83, Buried at Duncan.

Emil Berry, 83, pioneer Tombstone resident died Thursday at St. Mary's Hospital, Tucson. He had been a patient there for the past three months, suffering from a broken hip. Berry was the stepfather of Mrs. P.W. Newbury and John Kries of the Bisbee district.

A native of Scottdale, Pa., he came west in the early days and for a time worked for the old Consolidated mining company here. He later went to Leadville and then to Gleeson, still following the mining business. He was a close firend and associate of the late John Gleeson.

Berry retired from the mining business about 25 years ago and started raising cattle near the boom town of Gleeson. About 13 years ago he sold his holding in this area and bought a ranch on the Gila river near Duncan. It was here that Mrs. Berry died in 1936.

Survivors include a brother, John Berry and a sister, Mrs. Lilly White of Connelsville, Pa.; two step-daughters, Mrs. Charles Gordon, Medford, Ore., and Mrs. P.W. Newbury, Bisbee; and a step-son John F. Kries of Warren.

Services were conducted Saturday at Duncan."
