The Cantrells moved to Marion County, Alabama in the 1830s. Luther married Jane Cooper in 1841 in Marion County and lived there until 1860. In 1861 he lived in Helena, Karnes County, Texas.
Luther was often called Rice Cantrell. There are several records of his Civil War service:
Rise Cantrell, Pvt, Capt. John Littleton's Company of Mounted Volunteers, part of the Forces of the Rio Grando Military District. Pay request for pay from 29 Feb 1861 - 16 Jun 1861 and for pay "for traveling from Carricitas, the place of discharge to Helena, the place of my residence 300 miles." Signed John Littleton, mustering officer at Camp Carricitas 16 Jun 1861.
Also from Karnes county, "I Rise Cantrell do hereby authorize R W Spencer to draw the within amount due me from the state of Texas this 18 July A.D. 1862. [Signed] Rise Cantrel". The signature on this document has the same handwriting as a land patent from the Huntsville, Alabama Land Office. The land record was signed by L.R. Cantrell and dated August 27, 1855.
He is found again in records of 1864: R. Cantrell, Private. Capt. Monroe Upton's Co. D, Precinct no. 1, Parker County 1st Frontier District, Texas State Troops, Maj. Wm. Quayle commanding. He enlisted 10 Feb 1864 in Parker County, mustered in 10 Feb 1864, and served 10 days at $2. He was recorded as age 38. His name is found on one muster roll dated Jan 29, 1864 and one muster and payroll dated Feb 1, 1864-June 1, 1864. He also Enlisted July 1, 1864 in the same company. His name was on the muster roll for the month of July 1864, 1 rifle. Headquarters: Decatur.
