In 1860, he was a blacksmith by trade, his whereabouts unknown, but he most likely was living in or near Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He stood 5' 5" tall and had black hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted and mustered into federal service at Carlisle January 13, 1864, as a private with Co. A, 7th Pennsylvania Reserves (36th Pennsylvania Infantry). Captured at the battle of the Wilderness, he was incarcerated in the stockade at Andersonville, Georgia. Following parole, he was forwarded to Camp Parole, Annapolis, Maryland, where he died.
