Mrs. Dorothy Ellen Tompkins, age 90, of Clarence Care Center, Clarence, Mo, formerly of Williamstown, Mo. died Sunday September 7, 2008 at Moberly Regional Hospital, Moberly, Mo.

She was born September 5, 1918 near Benjamin, Mo, the daughter of William Knight and Bea Gruber McDaniel. She married Kenneth Tompkins on August 4, 1937.

She attended Plano Country School and graduated from Canton High School in 1937. She was very active in many school activities, including being a star basketball player. She was involved in many community organizations in the years they lived in Williamstown, especially the PTA and Williamstown Methodist Church. After moving to Kansas City she was employed by the US Agricultural Stabilization and Control Department.

She enjoyed music, genealogy, sign-language interpreting, RV camping, and traveled extensively with her husband. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother who encouraged and inspired all those around her to achieve meaningful goals and do great things. She will be truly missed by all.

Survivors include her husband; her son Harland (Harlie) and wife Rose Ann of Chandler, Az; her daughter Jean Gardner and husband Bob of Anabel, Mo; four grandchildren; four great grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters Edna Mae McDaniel and Leta McDaniel Riney Gibbons; two grandchildren; and two great granddaughters.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Kansas City and attended Christian Church of Christ of Graves Chapel, Anabel.

Funeral services will be Wednesday, September 10, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Davis Funeral Home in Canton, Mo. with Reverend Philip Lyon officiating. Burial will be in Zion Hill Cemetery, Monticello, Mo. Visitation will be from 12:00 p.m. until the time of service at 2:00 at the Davis Funeral Home.

The family suggest memorials be made to Clarence Care Center, 111 East St., Clarence, Mo. 63437.
