Edward Henry Bolton, a life-long resident of Sabine Parish, Louisiana, was the son of John Thomas Bolton and the former Martha Jane "Mattie" Small.

On December 23, 1897, Edward Bolton was married to Nancy Catherine Arnold, a daughter of James Monroe Arnold II and a great-granddaughter of the Arnold family patriarch, James Monroe Arnold.

Edward and Nancy Bolton were the parents of five children, the first child, a baby boy, was born and died on September 23, 1898. A little more than a year later, they welcomed their only daughter into the world, Laura Ann. Laura Ann's birth was followed by three more sons, William Frederick Bolton, Henry Aurbon Bolton, and T. J. Bolton. Only William Frederick lived a long life. Henry died five months after his birth, and T. J. died four days shy of age 7 months. Laura Ann grew up and married only to die six weeks after her wedding day.

Nancy Catherine Arnold Bolton followed her daughter in death just 20 months later. Perhaps losing four of her five children finally broke her heart.

Edward would marry a second time two years after Nancy's death. Lydia Jane Sandel would become the second Mrs. Edward Henry Bolton. She would become the mother of six children: Edd Herald Bolton, a male infant who did not survive, Elizabeth Bolton Ashworth, Cora Jeanette Bolton, Theodore Henry Bolton, all deceased, and an unidentified daughter who survives.
