This morning at 6:30 o'clock Mr. Andrew S. Artist passed away at St. John's hospital from injuries inflicted upon him last Friday night by N. Marquez, a coal heaver. Death was due to concussion of the brain, the patient remaining unconscious from the time of the accident until the end came this morning. No arrangements have yet been made for the funeral.
Mr. Artist was one of the pioneer residents of Cheyenne, coming here with the building of the Union Pacific. He was then employed by the Union Pacific and was one of the oldest engineers on the Overland route. He was born 60 years ago and served throughout the Civil war as a member of the Seventh Iowa cavalry. He was a member of the J.F. Reynolds post, G.A.R., of this city, the Cheyenne lodge of Elks and Cheyenne lodge No. 1, A.F. & A.M.
He was appointed city pumpman in 1890 and held that position up until his death. He had countless friends in the city who will learn with regret of his tragic death and the grief-stricken family have the sympathy of the entire community in their sorrow.
Deceased is survived by a widow and five children, Mrs. William Wolcott, Mrs. E. O. Whitington, C. E. Artist and George Artist, all of whom reside in the city, and Harry Artist who lives in Denver.
N, Marquez. who inflicted the terrible beating upon Mr. Artist which caused his death, was this morning turned over to the county authorities and is now in the county jail. County Attorney Ross states that an information charging Marquez with murder in the first degree will be filed against him.
