"Jesse was the son of John and Elizabeth Hinkle. On 5 January 1848 at Indian Creek, Wayne County, Tennessee, he married Lydia Watts Morrow, daughter of John Morrow and Elizabeth Worthen Cypert. Jesse participated in the Civil War as First Sergeant, Co G, 10th Tennessee Infantry, Union, commanded by his brother-in-law, James Andrew Casteel; he was honorably discharged in 1865 and returned to his farm".
