Sherman C. Benton*, 78, Claysburg, died early Saturday afternoon, Sept. 28, 2002, at the Altoona Hospital Center for Nursing Care.

He was born July 23, 1924, in Pavia, PA, son of the late Harry and Alma (Wysong) Benton. He married Winifred E. Kimmel Aug. 10, 1946, at the Claysburg United Methodist Church parsonage.

He was a member of the Claysburg United Methodist Church. He retired as a press operator from General Refractories Corp., Claysburg, in 1971 with 34 years of service. He enjoyed hunting, doing plumnbing work and collecting tools.

Surviving are his wife; a son, Dennis S. Benton of Claysburg; a daughter, Phyllis B. Kinser of Altoona; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; a brother, Sheldon Benton of Claysburg; and five sisters; Shirley Dively, Ora Imler and Florine Cox, all of Claysburg, Norma Ritchey of East Freedom and Viola Feathers of Imler. He was preceded in death by a brother. H. Leland Benton.

Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Leslie Funeral Home, Claysburg, where funeral services will b eheld at 10 a.m. Tuesday by Pastor Keith R. Showalter. Interment at Claysburg Union Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the National Kidney Foundation of Western Pennsylvania, 555 Grant St. Suite 380, Pittsburgh, PA 16219.
