Archie Lee (Arch) Evans was born Aug 28, 1873 at Butler to Thomas Turner Evans II and Mary Graves Ivy Evans. (For more information, see Josiah Ivy story in this Vol.) Arch married Belle Childs, but she died when she was only twenty years old, on Sept. 21, 1900. She is buried at Antioch Cemetery.
Arch married Lillie Folk Emmons in Oct. 1909. She was the widow of Jim Emmons by whom she had eight sons. Seven of these were living when she married Arch. (See Jim Emmons story in this Vol.) Lillie was the daughter of Mattie Mayo and James W.B.F. Folk. They had two daugthers, Dora B. and Lillie (Lura Lillian).
Dora B. married W.M. (Stout) Robertson and they had four children. These were Clara, Ethel, Riley, and a son who died as an infant. Ethel married a Mr. Helms and had a printing shop in Dallas. Clara ran the switchboard at the telephone office in Fairfield and in Bullard. All of these are buried at Lake Chappell Cemetery.
After Mattie Folk's husband died, she married Joe Ervin McAdams in Dec 1879. Joe Ervin's wife Hannah had died in 1877. Mattie and Joe Ervin lived on the McAdams place about 2 miles east of Fairfield. Mattie's daughter Lillie married Joe Ervin's grandson, Jim Emmons and they lived with the McAdams. Joe Ervin died in 1901, and Jim died in 1905.
When Lillie married Arch, they continued to live with her mother on the home place. Arch and Lillie had three children. They are Leotha, Lura Alice, and Ethyl Leola. Arch farmed and was a mail carrier for the Mt. Zion, Turlington, Antioch, and Young communities. The children attended school at Mt. Zion until they were in about the 7th grade. Then they attended school at Fairfield. Tuition was $3 per child each month at Fairfield. Ethyl graduated in 1933.
Lillie and Arch had many things to do taking care of their children and running the farm. Arch had cotton and corn crops, and always raised a large garden, watermelon patch, orchard, and kept bees. Lillie and her mother were busy cooking, canning, and sewing. They made many quilts for the large family, crocheted, and embroidered. Lillie also painted on glass.
On washday, the whole family went to the spring on their land. Arch and the boys loaded the wash pot, clothes, and lye soap. They built a fire to heat the water and everyone helped wash the clothes in the spring water.
During this time, families who lived in the country would go to town on Saturday to get their week's supplies. When the sisters were small they would get a nickel from their Uncle Joe Evans and buy ice cream at Joe Roller's ice cream place.
Each summer the Evans families would travel by covered wagon to Evans lake and spend a week fishing, visiting and camping out. On the trip home when Lura Alice was 6 years old the girls were walking behind the wagon. Their daddy made the horses go faster and frightened Lura Alice so that she has not forgotten it until this day.
Arch was always an avid reader to the daily newspaper. Many mornings Lura Alice would take the plow while her daddy went to Fairfield for the newspaper.
Mattie Folk McAdams died April 15, 1927, and is buried at Lake Chappell besides James Folk. Lillie died June 2, 1947, and is buried beside Jim Emmons at Lake Chappell. Arch died Oct. 8, 1953, and is buried by his first wife Belle at Antioch. Arch was living in Dallas, Texas with his daughter Lura Alice after Lillie passed away. Arch left Dallas to go help his brother in Butler with farm as his brother was ill. Arch died there. Arch father was Thomas Turner Evans 1848 - 1884. Buried at Evans family plot or the Ivy family plot.
