U.S. Congressman. He graduated from Princeton College, in 1882, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1783 and proceeded to practice law in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was a delegate to the Pennsylvania State convention to ratify the Federal Constitution in 1787, secretary of the anti-Federal conference in 1788 and a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, in 1791. During the Whisky Insurrection in 1791, he was appointed Brigadier General in command of Dauphin County Brigade and was later appointed Major General of the 3rd Division of the Pennsylvania Militia. In 1797, he was elected as a Republican to the Fifth Congress and to the next four succeeding Congresses, serving until his death at age 43.
