Sister of War Governor Dead - Mrs. Martha Yates Scott, Resident of Sangamon County for 85 years, Succumbs to Injuries in New [sic] Berlin. - Mrs. Martha Scott, sister of the late Richard Yates, famous war governor of Illinois, died yesterday morning at her home in New [sic] Berlin from injuries suffered in a fall two weeks ago. Since the accident, in which the aged woman suffered a fractured hip, death had been a matter of only a few days. Her passing was not unexpected. Mrs. Scott was 93 years, 4 months and 13 days old.

Mrs. Scott had been a resident of this county for the past eighty-five years. She was born in Warsaw, Gallatin county, Kentucky, July 9, 1823, and was the daughter of Henry and Millicant Yates. Her mother died while the family was in Kentucky. Later her father remarried and in the year of 1931, following the winter of the "deep snow", the family came to this county, where they purchased a large tract of land in the vicinity of Island Grove. In 1833, Mrs. Scott's father laid out the town of New Berlin. He was also one of the men instrumental in the founding of the town of Warsaw, where the decedent was born.

Mrs. Scott was married to John W. Scott, September 7, 1848, and of the nine children born to them, three survive. They are Henry W. Scott of Cunningham, Kans., Mrs. Louisa A. Robertson and John W. Scott, Jr., of New Berlin.

Mrs. Scott united with the Christian church in her early childhood. The younger generation knew her as "Aunt Patsey." Her love of flowers was a ruling passion even to the end.

The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the New Berlin Christian church. The interment will be in the New [sic] Berlin cemetery.
