Homer Lee Bennett, a life long resident of Willow Springs unexpectedly passed away while at his home on Sunday, Aug. 10, 2008, due to natural causes. Born April 1, 1949, to Homer C. and Hazel M. (Roberts) Bennett in Solo, Mo., he was 59 years old.

Although Homer was born in Solo, he was raised in Willow Springs, where he attended the local schools. He was a graduate of Willow Springs High School, class of 1967. He went on to receive his bachelor of science degree in education and began his teaching career at the Willow Springs Middle School where he taught seventh and eighth grade social studies.

After 31 years of teaching, he retired and went to work for the Kabul Nursing Home, where he was employed as a social service coordinator for approximately six years. However, it was said that "drama was his passion," which was evident by the fact that Homer acted in and directed several plays for the High School Drama Department and the Willow Springs Theater Guild. He loved an audience and to put on a show.

He made the best out of every situation and put humor in the lives of those around him. He belonged to several organizations, but was especially fond of the Cabool Kiwanis, the Willow Springs Theater Guild, and the Missouri National Education Association.

He was also a long time member of the First Baptist Church, where he participated in the church's choir until illness prevented him from further doing so. He had many enjoyments in his life such as working in his flower garden and taking care of the stray cats and skunks, which always seemed to congregate in his yard.

However, he especially enjoyed his daughters. It was said that he could curl hair, match clothes, cook, bake and loved to play dress up. He was a wonderful father, grandfather, brother and friend and will be greatly missed.

Homer was preceded in death by his parents and his sister Juanita Moore.

He is survived by his wife Pamela Lou (Coatney) Bennett; his loving daughters, Nicki Bennett Johnson and her husband Christopher of San Antonio, Texas; Karina Bennett and her fiancé, Andrew Smith, of Mountain Grove; and Courtney Bennett of Willow Springs. He is further survived by his brother, Dale Bennett and his wife Betty; sister, Kay Miller and her husband Bob all of Houston, Mo.; grandchildren KayLee Johnson of San Antonio, Texas, and McKenna Smith of Willow Springs. He will be especially missed by his beloved dog Trixie.

Funeral services for Homer will be held Saturday, Aug. 16, 2008, at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church, located at North Harris and East Fourth Streets in Willow Springs with Pastor Joel Hinds officiating. A family night and visitation will be held Friday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Willow Funeral Home, located at 106 E. Third Street in Willow Springs. Interment will follow Saturday's services at the Willow Springs City Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of Willow Funeral Home.
