Joel, the son of James J. Williamson and Barbara H. Williamson of East Meadow NY, the husband of Frances D. Williamson of Long Beach CA enlisted in the US Marine Corps on June 24 1964 in New York, NY. He arrived in Vietnam on January 25, 1967 and was assigned with Company I, 3d Battalion, 7th Marines, 1st MARDIV (Rein) FMF.

* Sgt Williamson was presented with the Bronze Star Medal with Combat "V" "For heroic achievement ....on 12 October 1967...."

During Operation FOSTER a reconnaissance squad of Marines from Company I, were taken under heavy small arms fire by an enemy force estimated to be 40 men from a well prepared and concealed position in Phu Long village, in Duc Duc District. The Marines returned fire and called for assistance, a reaction platoon responded but was also immediately taken under heavy automatic weapons and small arms fire sustaining the majority of the casualties. The rest of India Company was committed to the engagement which lasted until darkness fell enabling the enemy to slip away from the battlefield. The Marines suffered five men killed and twelve wounded during this engagement on the sixth day of the operation. One of the causualties was Cpl Petersen who was killed in action as a result of a gunshot wound from enemy rifle fire.
