John Henry Harless was born along the Appalachian Trail in Tennessee, and his parents were Ollie Bell Marion and Jasper Harless.

John's father Jasper died during the great flu epidemic from consumption when John was young, and his mother Ollie re-married twice. John's step-fathers were Christopher Columbus Pendleton, and Joseph Ferguson.

John's (late) Grandparents were Andrew P. Harless and Elizabeth Jones, and John (Marien) Marion and Orpha Gilbert from Tennessee.

John moved to Maryland with his 4 siblings and mother after his step-father died. He was an auto mechanic in Glenwood, and West Friendship, and worked as a farm mechanic for his brothers in Maryland. He suffered from poor vision when a young adult, and had corrective cataract surgery when elderly.

His first wife was Ada Ruth, and they had one son named Emerson Harless. His second wife was Retha Mae Lee, and she was the daughter of Robert Edward Lee and Carrie B. Speak.
