Bryan Milton DuBose was the second oldest child of Thomas Milton DuBose and Lena Mae Smith. The other children were Lena Frances, Ellen Ollie, Edmond Harvey, Orben Ray, and Otha Wayne DuBose.
Bryan served in the U. S. Navy on the USS Enterprise CV6 during World War II. The official records show that he served April 1942 - October 1943, however the family story is different. Bryan always said that he signed up before he turned 18. He told stories of being on the Enterprise when Pearl Harbor was bombed, but the ship was delayed and they didn't make it to harbor on schedule. This kept them from being bombed on December 7, 1941. This would have made him 17, as he said. Further evidence that Bryan was in Hawaii is that he carried a photo in his wallet with the inscription "Charlie (Hawaiian) & Me". Bryan took shrapnel in his foot during a battle and while he was in the hospital, a nurse discovered his real age. The Navy gave him a general discharge.
Bryan came to Montgomery, Texas because his father, Thomas Milton DuBose, was living there. Bryan met Annie Mildred Smith and they married and had 3 daughters, Addie Mae, Linda Sue, and Lena Pauline.
Bryan held many jobs, but the one he was most proud of was as bus driver and maintenance for Montgomery I.S.D. Bryan worked for the school district officially from 1961-1993. However, he continued to work part time for the school district until his death in 1996. Most kids from the area who rode the bus during those years remember Mr. DuBose who drove bus 4.
Bryan was the first city Marshall for the town of Montgomery and a charter member of the Montgomery Volunteer Fire Department. In 1961, the family moved to the town of Montgomery because part of Bryan's pay by the school district was to live in the old school house that used to be where the baseball field was on FM 149 south of town.
Anyone who knew Bryan DuBose, knew he was a kind and generous man. He was known to raise large crops of vegetables and call members of the community in to help harvest. Everyone who showed up to help, not only went home with their part of the vegetables, but also part of a hog or cow that he had butchered that year. As Mr. Deveraeux said at Bryan's funeral, "I was convinced that there was a freezer in his house that had my name on it."
Bryan died on August 4, 1996, after a brave battle with liver cancer. He was much loved and very missed!
