James W. (Jim) Rigney, son of Harrison and Matilda (Shelton) Rigney was born in Fentress County, TN and moved by covered wagon with his parents to Texas about 1890, where they settled on a farm near Stephenville, in Erath County. He was married to Mattie Lee Keeton on Nov. 13, 1893 in Ellis County, TX. About 1897 they moved, again by covered wagon, to Washita County, OK and settled on a farm near Cloud Chief.
Six children were born to this marriage, two of whom died in early childhood. Mr. Rigney was a farmer and a store-keeper, at one time owning, with his brother, a general store in Altus, Jackson County, OK and another time he owned a general store in Dill City, back in Washita County. About 1915 the Rigney family moved to Florida and bought a small orange grove near Groveland. At one time they moved into Groveland where he worked on the railroad and she ran a boarding house in their home and still later they bought another orange grove south of Groveland and moved there. His wife preceded him in death in 1943. He lived alone there until his last illness and passed from this life at a hospital in Jacksonville, FL. Both were intered at Greenwood Cemetery, Groveland, Lake County.
Survivors include his children, Elza, Pearl (and her husband, Kirk Latimer), Essie (and her husband, Sam Butler) and Harry (and his wife, Kathleen) and nine grandchildren.
