Solemn funeral services were conducted at St. Joseph's Church, Pierz, at 10, Saturday morning, for Herbert R. Gruber, with interment in the Pierz cemetery. Celebrant of the Requirem was Rev. Robert Voigt, with Rev. Frederick Kampsen assisting as deacon and Rev. Richard Leisen as subdeacon. The funeral was under the direction of the Pierz American Legion Post.
Serving as pallbearers wer Elmer Bayerl, Ted Weber, Rolland Schreiner, Henry Schmidtbauer, Ernest Gruber and Gene Gruber. Honorary pallbearers were Clarence Merkling, Gilbert Kapsner, Charley Lochner, Roman Brandl, Robert Tretter and Leonard Thommes.
Friends called at the Virnig Funeral home in Pierz from Friday noon. The parish rosary was recited there at 8:30 that evening.
Herbert passed away at the Veterans Hospital at Fort Snelling, Wednesday at the age of 50. A lifelong resident of Pierz, he had served in the army for four years during World War II, with overseas dudty in Iran. He was a member of the Pierz post of the American Legion, and of the Veterans of Forein Wars in Little Falls.
He is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joe Gruber, this place, and the following brothers and sisters: Alphonse, Flint, Michigan; Simon, Albert Lea; Carl and Urban, this place; Mrs. Albert Dietz (Lucy), Little Falls; Mrs. Frank Meidl (Cresence), St. Cloud; Mrs. Philip Tretter (Edith), Lastrup; Mrs. Herman Langer (Esther), St. Paul; Mrs. Leonard Kasper (Eleanore), this place; and Mrs. Elmer Sadlowsky (Caroline), Upsala. Another brother, Wilfred, was lost in action with the navy in 1945.
