John K. Knowles, 58, was for many years a resident of Salt Lake, died Tuesday in New York of complications following an operation, according to word received by relatives here.
Mr. Hales was born in Bountiful, (other sources indicate born in Salt Lake City) where he grew to manhood. He then moved to Idaho, where he resided until 1907, when he came to Salt Lake. He lived here until about five years ago when he moved to New York.
His widow, Mrs. Nettie Porter Hales, a son, J. Rulon Hales, and a daughter, Mrs. Lois Smith, were at the bedside at the time of death.
Besides his widow, he is survived by the following children: J. Rulon, New York City; Mrs. Loa Smith, Washington, D.C.; Mrs. Leona Ashton, Salt Lake; Mrs. Cleo Page, Bountiful; Mrs. Thelma Brown and Mrs. Dorothy Snow, Los Angeles; one brother, Steven Hales, Squirrel, Idaho; and three sisters, Mrs. Loa Burningham, Bountiful; Mrs. Lydia Larsen, Rexburg, Idaho; and Mary Hulse, Squirrel, Idaho.

Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon in the Bountiful Second Ward for John Hales, who died in New York., Bishop James E. Burns presiding, who together with Alma B. Larsen of Rexburg and W. W. Willey of Salt Lake were the speakers. John Longdon of Salt Lake rendered a solo; Brother and Sister Price of Salt Lake two duets and Joseph Garrett and Ida Gerrett Hepworth a duet; John Porter of Centerville offered the opening prayer, A. O. Ashton the benediction; and Joseph E. Hepworth dedicated the grave in the Bountiful cemetery. There was a good attendance and beautiful floral offerings.
Mrs. John Hales, who accompanied her husband's remains here from N.Y. for the funeral will accompany her daughters, Mrs. Thelma Brown of Long Beach and Mrs. Dorothy Snow of Los Angeles, when they return home. Her son, Rulon, who came out with her, will return to his home in N.Y. on Thursday of next week.
Bishop Johnson and wife of Idaho and Mr. and Mrs. Alma Larsen and son and daughter, Melvin and Velma, of Rexburg, and Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hulse of Squirrel, Idaho, who were down to attend the funeral of John Hale, returned to their homes, Sunday; also Mr. and Mrs. Elliot of Ogden.
