His early years were spent growing up on the family farm. After his father died, and the family farm was sold, he and his mother moved in town and lived in the home once owned by his maternal grandmother. He was a 1946 graduate of Osceola High School, Osceola, Nebraska. He served as president of his high school class and lettered in football and basketball.

He served as a private in the U.S. Army in Japan, 1946-1948. When his service ended, he returned to Nebraska and enrolled in the College of Engineering at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. During the Korean Conflict, and as a reservist, he was recalled to service with the U.S. Army in 1950. When his service ended in Korea, he returned to Nebraska and settled in Omaha.

He was employed with the Gates Corporation of Denver, Colorado, as an engineer. He was a member of St. Timothy's Lutheran Church, Omaha, Nebraska where he served on the church council, three terms as president.
He also served as President and Building Chairman for St. Timothy's new Church and Campus.

He enjoyed working on home improvement projects. He was an enthusiastic sports fan (especially Cornhusker football), an outdoor enthusiast and was an avid and competitive golfer.
