Son of James Johnson Barnett (1812-1884) and Elizabeth Willie [Wylie] (1813-1884).

George was a veteran of the Civil War. He was a Private in Shelby's Regiment for Texas. He owned land around Weatherford and listed as a farmer on the census. He was a City Commissioner of Weatherford, Texas in 1886.

On 23 November 1873, he met and married Florence Arzilla Crouch when her family was passing through Parker County. Her parents were Joseph S. Crouch and Margaret Ann King. They had 10 children, and an infant son who died in infancy and Simms Barnett who died as at age 3.
