Father Kiffmeyer, Crosierite, dies

ONAMIA -- Father Joseph Kiffmeyer, OSC, died July 12 at Community Mercy Hospital here. Pastor of St. Matthias parish, Fort Ripley, he had been hospitalized since April with terminal cancer.

Father Kiffmeyer was born August 12, 1913, at St. Augusta, one of ten children born to Henry and Josephine (Moeller) Kiffmeyer. He attended St. Mary School in St. Augusta. He entered Crosier Seminary in 1928 and was invested as a novice at Immaculate Conception Monastery, Hastings, Nebraska, August 27, 1933. He professed his first vows in the Crosier Order August 28, 1934, and made his solemn profession at Immaculate Conception Monastery August 28, 1938. He was ordained to the priesthood June 3, 1939, by Bishop Joseph Busch of St. Cloud.

In 1940 Father Kiffmeyer was transferred to Sacred Hart Seminary at Forth Wayne, Indiana, where he taught algebra, geometry, German and Greek for seven years. In 1947 he taught geometry and German at Crosier Seminary, here, until 1954 when he was assigned to St. Matthias parish April 1 of that year. In 1961 he was transferred to St. Rita parish at Hillman. In 1966 he was reassigned to St. Matthias parish where he remained until his death.

From 1947 until 1954 Father Kiffmeyer directed the Crosier Missionary office at Onamia. For a number of years he also taught part-time at Pierz Memorial High School.

Survivors include two brothers, Leo and Albert, and six sisters, Mrs. Peter Waltzing, Mrs. Anthony Krippner, Mrs. Herman Koering, Mrs. Albert Beumer, Mrs. Andrew Gohman and Mrs. Adolph Hansich.

After a funeral Mass celebrated at St. Matthias church, July 16, by Bishop Anderson of Duluth, the body was taken to the Crosier Monastery where Father Richard John, Provincial of the Crosier Order, Province of St. Odilia, celebrated a funeral Mass. He was buried at the Crosier Community Cemetery in Onamia.

Fr. Kiffmeyer will lie in state at the Brenny Funeral Home, Pierz, today. His body will be moved to St. Matthias Church Sunday morning. After a funeral mass at 11 a.m. Monday by Bishop Paul F. Anderson, Duluth, the body will be taken to Crosier Monastery, Onamia. The Rev. Richard John OSC, Provincial of the Crosier Order, Province of St. Odilia, will celebrate a funeral mass 10 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Crosier Community Cemetery.
