Nicole Suvegas of Waukonda, Illinois. She graduated from the University of Illinois at Chicago and George Washington University, where she obtained a Master of Arts in political science. She was soon to complete her Ph.D. in political science with an emphasis on international relations from Johns Hopkins University, where she also served as managing editor for the "Review of International Political Economy." Her dissertation was on "Markets & Mullahs: Global Networks, Transnational Ideas and the Deep Play of Political Culture." She presented numerous papers to international relations organizations and served as a graduate teaching assistant. She wasn't the kind of person that wanted to just talk about policy she was the kind of person who wanted to get out and make it. She was working to help the military understand the customs, culture and needs of the community, so she could help stop the killing and help build democracy and understanding. She wanted to get people involved. When she got her Master's degree, she didn't follow the path of many of her peers. She joined the Army as a private, because she wanted to be in the world and not just watch what was going on around her. Nicole was supporting the Army's 3rd Brigade Combat Team (BCT), 4th Infantry Division, as part of the Human Terrain System (HTS) program. She began her current tour in Iraq in April of 2008. Before joining BAE Systems, she had worked in Iraq for one year as a civilian contractor. Previously, she had served as an Army reservist in Sarajevo, Bosnia-Herzegovina, supporting the multinational SFOR/NATO Combined Joint Psychological Operations Task Force. Nicole was working in Sadr City, Iraq when she was killed by an explosion. Nicole was the beloved wife of David Iverson, loving step-mother of Cailin and Terran, cherished daughter of Ed and Rita Suveges, dear sister of Michelle (Patrick) Mertins and fond aunt of Megan and Sean Mertins.
