November 17, 1899 - Storm Lake Pilot Tribune - The Capital: Charles Kelly, stock buyer, residing a short distance west of Greenwood Park, was instantly killed in a runaway at 8 o'clock Saturday night. He was returning home on horse back and when in the vicinity of Thirty-fifth street and Grand avenue his horse was frightened and became unmanageable, running wildly to Forty-eight street, where it hurled the rider against a large tree standing by the roadside. Death was instantaneous. The unfortunate mans skull was crushed and his brains scattered in every direction.

Acting Coroner Ayleworth and a patrol wagon filled with officers arrived on the scene an hour later. The body was removed to Dr. McDermott's morgue and a coroner's jury empaneled. Joseph Fagan, an employee of the Getchel and Martin mills, and John Dunn, employed by the Chamberlain Medicine company, were the only witnesses to the accident.

Charles Kelly was born at Tipton, Iowa, in 1849. Moved to Des Moines in 1885. He was a son of John B. Kelly, of Cedar county, prominent stock dealer. The funeral services were held at the Jordan M.E. church, in west Des Moines. Tuesday afternoon, November 14, 1899. Rev. Macy, of University Place, conducting the funeral services. OBITUARY - Charles Kelley, a stock buyer, residing a short distance west of Greenwood Park, was instantly killed in a run away at 8 o'clock Saturday night. He was returning home on horseback and when in the vicinity of 35th street and Grand avenue his horse was frightened and became unmanageable, running wildly to 48th street, where it hurled its rider against a large tree standing by the roadside. Death was instantaneous. The unfortunate man's skull was crushed and his brains scattered in every direction.

Acting Coroner Aylesworth and a patrol wagon filled with officers arrived on the scene an hour later. The body was removed to McDermott's morgue and a corner's jury impaneled, consisting of Officers Hector, Donnegan, and Lattimer.

Joseph Fagan, an employee of the Getchel & Martin mills, and John Dunn, employed by the Chamberlain Medicine Company, were the only witnesses to the accident. They stated that Kelley had his horse under perfect control until he reached 35th street. There it became frightened and commenced to rear and plunge. He wore 2 heavy spurs, and with every plunge of the horse they dug deeply into its flanks with the result that the animal was soon crazed with pain and fright. When opposite Greenwood park, it swerved across the curb and into the parking and ran from there to 48th street through the trees that line the road at this point. It was remarkable that the end did not come sooner. The rider was exhausted by his effort to control his steed and was fast loosing consciousness. He was swaying from one side to the other when the horse barely grazed a large maple and this rider struck it with the result already mentioned.

Mr. Kelley was 47 years old. He leaves a wife and a number of children. He has been engaged in the stock business in Des Moines all his life and was considered a good horseman.
