Wife of Lloyd Smith, mother of Jeannie, Carrie and a son; grandmother of Blake, Brittany, Harmony and a few others.

Jean was one of my customers at my beauty shop and she had a glow about her that made everyone around her feel loved and cheery. She laughed a lot and was a very dear person.

LaJean Frances "Jean" Smith, age 70, of the Iron Gates community, west of Joplin, passed away at 1:08 p.m. Friday, June 13, 2008.

Born July 2, 1937, in Joplin, she was the daughter of the late Jess Delbert Whitlock and Luella Mae (Cornell) Whitlock. She attended Emerson Elementary and South Junior High School and then moved to California, where she attended Franklin High School and worked as a coding clerk for Specific Indemnity Insurance Co. She returned to Joplin, where she met and married Chester Lloyd Smith on July 5, 1967. While he was in the service they moved to Phoenix City, Ala. Following his discharge they again returned to Joplin, moving to Iron Gates Road, where she was happy raising her three children. She was a dedicated mother and wife.

She was a member of Central Christian Center, where she served as a teacher, helped with the bus ministry and as she said, "loved the Lord and best of all learning God's word". She enjoyed fishing and camping with her children and liked to knit and crochet. Most recently she was employed at Wal-Mart, where she worked at the service desk.

Survivors include her husband, Chester Lloyd Smith, of the home; two daughters, Jean F. Gorham and husband, Gerald, of Gadsden, Ala., and Carrie Ann Wakefield and husband, Roy, of Joplin; a son, Mel E. Smith and wife, Brandy, of Gadsden; two brothers, Jay Dee Whitlock and wife, Barbara, of Miami, Okla., and Bradley Lynn Whitlock and wife, Debra, of Springfield, Mo.; two sisters, Carol Menzer and husband, George, of Miami, and Kaaren Arvilla Berman and husband, Harry, of Los Angeles, Calif.; 10 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. She was loved very much by everyone who knew her and she will be missed very much by all.

Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 17, at Central Christian Center with Rev. Doug Wilkerson officiating. Graveside services in Exeter, Mo., will be at Maplewood Cemetery at 3 p.m. Tuesday. Pallbearers will be Blake Bock, Channien Reed, Kyle McGuire, Colton Smith, Greg Smith and John Smith.
